Top 5 Best Places to Elope in California
California is one of the top destinations in the US for elopements because of its diverse scenery and incredible selection of venues. Whether you’re looking for a scenic spot on public land to share private vows or a place to gather with a small group of loved ones, you have options that range from beaches and coastal cliffs to deserts and sand dunes, to forests and mountains — there’s somewhere for everyone no matter what type of scenery you prefer.
Below is a list of the TOP best places to elope in California. These locations are named specifically because of the unique scenery and experience they offer. While they are all a great fit for both elopements and intimate weddings, I recommend prioritizing a private venue if you’re having more than a handful of guests or looking to have a weekend/extended celebration. 1. Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree is, in my opinion, the best desert elopement location in California! There are a range of locations within the national park available for ceremonies and endless scenic spots for your photos. All you need to get married here is a $120 special use permit! This option is perfect for simpler ceremonies with a small group of guests. To round out your day, I recommend booking a nice Airbnb to get ready at. With permission prior to booking, an Airbnb may also be suitable for a small dinner gathering as a post-elopement celebration.
If you’re planning an intimate wedding with a full ceremony setup and reception, your best option is to book one of the private venues in the area that host events. If you go this route, I recommend planning a trip into the park for your wedding portraits, which can be done on the wedding day or the day before or after!

2. Big Sur
Big Sur is my top coastal destination in California for those looking for a place that feels a little further from busy city areas but still easily accessible. The natural scenery consists of rugged coastal cliffs, beaches, redwood forests, and mountains so it’s perfect if you also want to spend time exploring nature on your wedding day or just want a variety of scenery in your photos. If ocean views are your priority, I recommend staying in the northern part of Big Sur (near Carmel, Monterey, etc.) and if the redwoods are a priority, I recommend booking one of the accommodation or venue options in the central Big Sur area.

3. Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park is truly an awe-inspiring place and one of my favorites for elopements. From the valley floor surrounded by pines and the granite summits of Half Dome and El Capitan to the epic viewpoints above, and all of the waterfalls, lakes, and trails in between, there’s no shortage of beautiful spots for your ceremony and portraits. I recommend a fall date and booking accommodations in the park early to save on drive time!

4. Malibu
With massive rock formations, sea caves, and cliffs overlooking the ocean, Malibu is one of the more unique beach options to choose from in Southern California. If you’re looking for a romantic and scenic location to get married that’s closer to the city with a bit more to do in the surrounding area, Malibu is a good choice! For elopements here I recommend a sunrise ceremony to avoid crowds and booking a place to stay that has an ocean view. There are also lots of places to stay in the mountains nearby — renting a vintage car to drive through the canyon and up the coast is a great way to add something a little extra fun to the day!
5. Death Valley National Park
I recommend Death Valley National Park to couples who are drawn to the desert but are looking for a truly unique experience. This park is a bit more remote than others in California so paired with the dramatic landscapes you’ll find here, it really feels like a whole other world. This is a great elopement location if you’re hoping for a late fall or winter date but don’t necessarily want cold weather. Accommodation options in and around the park are limited so I recommend planning in advance if you’d like to stay at one of the resorts or inns inside the park. If you’re feeling spontaneous and adventurous, there are a few campgrounds you can likely snag a spot at!
